EMS Annual Meeting, 6–11 Sep 2026, Utrecht & online: First announcement and call for session proposals

The European Meteorological Society and the local hosts in The Netherlands warmly invite you to the 2026 EMS Annual Meeting at the Jaarbeurs Conference Centre in Utrecht & online from 6 to 11 September 2026: https://www.ems2026.eu

Delta Climate in Europe: weather, water, and warnings

A programmatic focus of the 2026 Annual Meeting that reflects particular interests and activities of the host institutions in The Netherlands will be on the challenges for the broad European meteorological infrastructure posed by climate change: In particular coastal regions and river plains are prone to the effects of climate change because of the high population density and urbanisation and intense economic activities, but also the presence of unique wildlife and the high potential for compound events. Europe is rich in low lying coastal and river areas, which requires an advanced water management from technological and socio-economic perspective.

The topic will be prominently discussed in the plenary & strategic events. Session conveners are welcome to consider addressing specific aspects of this focus if it is relevant to the scope of their session; however, this is no requirement. Please visit the website for more details.

Session programme: proposals until 12 January 2026

A Provisional programme based on the session programme of the EMS2025 is now available online.

We invite everyone to contribute to the development of the session programme by proposing new sessions and conveners.

Should you want to suggest a new session, please send us the following information to ems-annual@emetsoc.org by 12 January 2026: session title, short session title (max. 45 characters), session scope/description, session conveners, and their email addresses.
We encourage all participants interested in organizing a session to build diverse convener teams, considering multiple countries and institutes, career stages, genders, and all other forms of diversity. The involvement of Early Career Scientists is strongly encouraged.
Please note that we assume that those volunteering as conveners are normally planning to attend the EMS Annual Meeting onsite to co-chair their session.
A short summary of convener tasks between now and the actual conference is given on the FAQ page.

Call for abstracts

The Programme and Science Committee (PSC) will compile the final session programme in January, and the call for abstracts will be opened in early February 2026. For more details study the timeline.

Aims & Opportunities

The Annual Meetings of the EMS aim at fostering cross-fertilization of ideas, feedback between science and applications, and the involvement of all the diverse actors in the fields of weather, climate, water, and the environment. The session programme will offer many opportunities for collaboration across the entire weather and climate enterprise (public, private, academic, users, and NGOs) to benefit societies in Europe and worldwide.

We would be delighted if you would inform your colleagues about these opportunities and distribute the invitation to your networks.

Dick Blaauboer, Chair of the PSC
On behalf of the Programme Stream Moderators and the PSC
